Sweet and Sour Beef Recipe
Ingredients

- 1 cup all-purpose flour
- 1½ tsps baking powder
- 4 tbsps cornstarch
- 1 tbsp oil
- 3 tbsps oil
- 8 oz fillet of beef, cut into 1-inch cubes
- 1 onion, peeled and cut into wedges
- 1 inch fresh root ginger, peeled and thinly sliced
- 1 clove garlic, peeled and crushed
- 1 green pepper, seeded and chopped
- #Sweet and Sour Sauce#
- 4 tbsps sugar
- ¼ tsp salt
- 4 tbsps red or malt vinegar
- 1 tsp fresh root ginger, peeled and minced
- 6 tbsps water
- 1 tbsp cornstarch or arrowroot
- 2 tsps cooked oil
- Few drops food coloring
- Oil for deep frying
Instructions
- #The combination of sweet and sour is an old favorite for Chinese food lovers.# For the batter: sieve the flour, baking powder and cornstarch.
- Beat in the 1 tbsp oil and add sufficient water to make a thick, smooth batter.
- Heat the 3 tbsps oil in a wok and stir-fry the beef for 2 minutes. Remove the beef.
- Fry the onion, ginger, garlic and green pepper for 2-3 minutes in the same oil. Remove the wok from the heat.
- Mix the sauce ingredients together and add to the wok. Return the wok to the heat and bring to the boil gently. Lower the heat and simmer gently for 2-3 minutes until thick and clear.
- Meanwhile, dip the beef cubes into the batter and deep fry in the hot oil until golden brown and crisp.
- Drain on paper towels. Arrange in a deep dish and pour the hot sauce over the beef. Serve with a chow mein dish or fried rice. #TIME# Preparation takes 15 minutes, cooking takes 15 minutes. #VARIATION# Thinly sliced carrots, cucumber and zucchini may also be added along with the onion, ginger and green pepper.
