Cumin is a member of the parsley family. It is an essential spice, which has a sharp and strong flavor and a pronounced smell. It is available ground or whole. Always buy small amounts of ground cumin as the smell and flavor deteriorate easily and quickly. For superior flavor, toast whole seeds before grinding.

Cumin is Used in Which Cuisines?

Cumin is much used in Latin American, Indian and North African cooking. In Turkey, ground cumin is added to minced meat dishes. In Spain, it is used in stews in combination with other spices. In Texas, it is used in chili con carne. In India, it is an essential part of the spice mixture called garam masala. It flavors sausages, pickles, relishes and a variety of other foods.
