#The combination of sweet and sour is an old favorite for Chinese food lovers.#
For the batter: sieve the flour, baking powder and cornstarch.
Beat in the 1 tbsp oil and add sufficient water to make a thick, smooth batter.
Heat the 3 tbsps oil in a wok and stir-fry the beef for 2 minutes. Remove the beef.
Fry the onion, ginger, garlic and green pepper for 2-3 minutes in the same oil. Remove the wok from the heat.
Mix the sauce ingredients together and add to the wok. Return the wok to the heat and bring to the boil gently. Lower the heat and simmer gently for 2-3 minutes until thick and clear.
Meanwhile, dip the beef cubes into the batter and deep fry in the hot oil until golden brown and crisp.
Drain on paper towels. Arrange in a deep dish and pour the hot sauce over the beef. Serve with a chow mein dish or fried rice.
